Pets Are Great Listeners
There are times when you want to forget all your troubles, forget all your cares and you don't have the time nor inclination to go downtown. You just want someone to talk to. Tell them how your day has been, but the problem with people is they will then want to tell you how their day was and sometimes you just aren't in the mood to have a conversation. You just want someone to listen. That's where pets come in.
Last night I joked on my personal Facebook page that my memoir would be titled Weird Made Up Conversations with Dogs, and that is because that is what a lot of my day is.
"Hey buddy, how has your day been. Let me tell you something. You're lucky you're a dog. You might think you want to get up from your couch nap and explore the great wide world but let me tell you how it is out there. Let me tell you about the people. Listen, my man, on the way over here I was driving along, minding my own business and then this car just stops. They just stopped driving, and I'm like, 'Dude. You're in the middle of the road. You can't just stop. Do something. Don't do nothing.' I tell you, man, they weren't turning or nothing. They just stopped. It had started to rain so maybe they panicked, but I just don't know about these people. Ok, that's enough talking. You ready for a walky-walk?"
And then on the walk we sing the last song that was in my head. You won't ever get a weirder luck from someone when you're belting out Daydream Believer while walking a hound dog. Then there are the numerous times I've been talking to a dog or singing a Leslie Gore tune and looked at a client's camera and said, "I hope they don't have sound," but, hey, it's my party and I'll cry if I want to.
That is what makes pets so great. You can tell them all your complaints and harangues and they won't leave the party holding Judy's hand. Nor will they make fun of you for your dated pop culture references. This is really what makes our pets great. They love you for who you are and not for who they wish you were. They give us love and caring and a warm fuzzy shoulder to lean on. They might eat your blue suede shoes, but they'll never tell you to hit the road Jack. When you need comfort and caring and want a friend to lend you an ear your pets will be there. They are excellent sounding boards and hardly ever talk back, and they won't ever stand up and walk out on you if you sing out of tune.
